Paul

PAUL is a journalist, history buff, actor, and former radio newscaster who has lived in the Washington area for three decades and still discovers something new every week. A graduate of the University of Delaware, Paul lives in Springfield with his wife Angela and their Maltipoo Paris, who enjoys watching crunchy gravel British costume dramas from the sofa along with her grownups. Among Paul’s many areas of interest are Elizabethan England, Shakespeare, American military history, ancient Egypt, and the history of Middle Earth (don’t disillusion him).

Where would you take an out-of-town visitor and why?  “Tudor Place. Many visitors to our area don’t know this gem but would really enjoy it. Tudor Place weaves together so many interesting strands including early high-end U.S. architecture, the family trees of George and Martha Washington, a visit by the Marquis de Lafayette, the War of 1812, domestic tensions between North and South during the Civil War, antique home appliances and furnishings, and much more. Then we’d head over to the tiny Freedom House Museum in Alexandria, because it’s profoundly important that we never lose awareness of the brutal history of domestic slave trading in the nation’s capital region. And after that sobering visit, we’d head to the exciting new Capitol Riverfront area for dinner and conversation about what we’d seen today.”

Portrait of Paul McLane

We had Paul as our tour guide. He was just great, so knowledgeable and yet very humble. His passion for history, the Memorials, and the Washington DC area shone thru in his stories and explanations. We were educated and entertained. Totally worth your time.”
